Since Obama has taken office in 2008, he has made significant ideological shifts. Although his point of view has changed during his career, his policy now increasingly endorses gay marriage, as Valerie Jarrett, a White House adviser, said: “We are delighted with the fact that when the president took office, same-sex marriage was legal in 2 states, and it is now legal in 37 states and the District of Columbia.” Obama has nominated eight openly gay persons to be U.S. ambassadors, and eleven to be judges on the federal judiciary, showing his commitment to fight discrimination. Indeed, the president himself stated:
“I always felt that same-sex couples should be able to enjoy the same rights, legally, as anybody else.”
